After watching some youtube videos last night, I'm convinced it's easy enough to do the ceramic coating on my own. $100 vs $1500 seems like a no-brainer, especially considering JV's rave reviews of the Gyeon

Ceramic coating is very easy to DIY. It is very time consuming (though presumably less so on a brand new car). It took me a total of ~ 12 hours to do the Boxster, but that included wash -> de-iron -> clay -> wash -> machine polish -> wash -> surface prep -> ceramic coat (multiple steps)

PPF is very not easy to DIY. I've done a few cars and it took me hours and the results were still not as good as the cars that I've had professionally done.

Did you use a PPF-specific coating? I see Gyeon makes one but idk if that's necessary. Plus my car won't be full PPF so I don't know if I want to hassle with using 2 different coatings

Hey Dan, I used the Gyeon Mohs Q2 system everywhere, including on the PPF. It turned out great.

Ok thanks, that's the one I'm looking at

(Although I guess there's a new version called Mohs EVO which only requires 1 coat)

Hmm. Gyeon says that it works on single stage.

May have to give that a shot on the red car.

I have no experience with Gyeon’s coatings, but I watched a YouTube video a few years ago were Matt Moreman of Obsessed Garage had a horrible experience with one of their coatings. He ended up having to remove it. I found it odd because I have always had positive results with any of the Gyeon line.

FYI, Kamikaze makes some really good ceramic coatings. Todd Copperidder owner of Esoteric uses it and on some high-end autos too.

I'm not a detailer, not really even a rank amateur, and I went with the Q2 based on a recommendation from a friend who is pretty obsessive about detailing. That was also more than a year ago. So I'm sure there are newer / better / easier? coatings.

I will say one needs to follow the directions to the letter.

I was pretty into it with the M3 and the Elise, but it's been many, many years since I really put any effort into maintaining my paint. I kind of look forward to getting back into it a little bit. And I can use the savings from hiring someone to do it into more PPF protection (or a few new pairs of shoes )

(I'm for sure paying to have the PPF done)
