On this particular matter, 987's vs 981's, it's actually hard for me to get myself to click on a comparison video, as much as I like content of that sort.
From 2006 to 2013, I had 987's and from 2016 to 2021 I've had 981's. Each purchase was after many test drives. I owned a 987.1S from new for 5 years and 35k miles. I owned a 987.2S, test drove a number of 987.1 and 987.2's, with PASM, without, etc. Test drove multiple (six?) R's. Then I drove 981 base, S and GTS cars (the GTS at least twice) both in cayman and boxster form. They were new in lots in 2016 when I was shopping. Owned a 981S now coming up on 5 years and owned a GT4 for a few months. A significant portion of my life seems to have been dedicated to getting the just right 987 and 981. Throughout this, there was an almost year ownership of 997.2 and many 991.1 drives. Last edited by equ; 03-19-2021 at 04:05 PM. |

So, as neat as this vid is (and it is, it's worth watching, it's well done as these things go) I desperately hate the video-ization of content online. I get that you can sell more and more expensive ads with video, it just drives me nuts to consume this kind of content that way.
I will, therefore, summarize for everyone: They both liked the 987 Cayman R best. The 718 turbo was second, mostly it sounded like because of some of the chassis changes compared to the 981. They liked the 981s engine and sound, but found that it was skewed a bit too much toward "GT" for their tastes. And, of course, the 718s engine is just enormously powerful. I imagine the GTS 4.0 would easily beat out the 718 turbo, though I am a little curious as to whether it would still beat the Cayman R. None of this helps me with my dilemma. |

Wow. Thanks for saying this! I was already to read it, then saw it was a video and passed. It takes so much longer to consume a video. It’s a much less efficient use of my time—unless I am really obsessed with a subject. If the latter, I want to mostly read the content and then just watch a couple of videos.
I guess I’m a words person... I know my son is a video guy. So I’m probably a dinosaur. |

I loved, loved the Cayman R, back in 2012-13... But then Matt got one and he was like 'meh'...
I still think it's a better car for me than the gt4. |

OK, I went and looked at the Meteor Grey one, because why not?
Mechanically it was in pretty nice shape, seemed relatively well preserved (and had recent N spec Michelin Pilots, which is a good shibboleth for someone being willing to spend money on maintenance). Cosmetically, though, it was pretty beat up. Lots of scratches on the door and and frunklid, including a couple of very deep ones. Plus from the fading of some of the plastic trim it's clear that it had spent a lot of time outside and uncovered. Easy pass, frankly. But TIL that the 987 didn't come standard with automatic climate control. Who knew? A couple of further 987.1 v. 987.2 impressions:
Still on the hunt for a good .2, but it's increasingly clear to me that the 10 year old cars that end up at Carmax are probably not the ones you want, even if they are low mileage. Last edited by JST; 03-20-2021 at 07:15 PM. |

Since we were on the topic of non standard colors, both of these are kind of neat:
It's a pretty low spec, but would be a fun look at me car https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/2...718-boxster-s/ Then theres this one, which seemed to get everything right except the transmission https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/d...pts-oslo-blue/
