View Full Version : Has anyone used a muffler patch kit?
So I'm looking at a car with a small hole in the muffler. Makes the car louder, doesn't really affect anything else, but probably won't pass VA safety inspection.
New muffler = $360 or so DIY. Muffler patch kit = $4.
Do these things work, even temporarily? Will it be enough to satisfy the average safety inspection tech? Any experience?
$360 for a muffler? Is this an e46 m3? :p
Those patches work okay...sometimes.

Um, mufflers aren't cheap in general. This is an e34 525i. I've never seen a BMW muffler for less than a few hundred bucks.
You can't just use a Magnaflow or some Midas brand?

Hadn't thought of that. Probably.
Please just tell me this isn't a dark green, automatic E34 525i. It seems like 90% of the E34s out there are dark green, automatic 525i's.

It is a
dark green
5-SPEED
E34 525i.
It was the first decent stick E34 I found. By "decent," let's just say my standards were not close to what they were for my M3s. But my budget was not close, either.
No, that's great. While that particular green is very 1990s, at least it's a stick.
I have to assume the interior is tan, right?
blee,
My parents (with a lot of prodding from me) recently acquired a 1995 525i. It's a slushy, but what a great car. Ours is black with what used to be very light grey leather.:ack:
Blair-
You need more power. Yes, it's tan inside. how did you guess? :ack:
Tom/Zach -- you both know my obsession with black cars, and with power in general. It's kind of shame, really, that I'm budget limited with this purchase. E34s are really, really nice cars, and $10k would get me a freakin' sweet ride. Oh, well. I'm about to pay a LOT less for mine, so I can't complain too much.

My parent paid 1/2 that for theirs. It has 105k miles and is in bad cosmetic condition.

Well, $10k would get you into an immaculate 535i. Damn, what a sweet ride that would be. I'd love a big six engine.
I'm paying a bit over a third of that for a '92 525i with 110k in decent cosmetic shape. Mechanicals are solid, with exception of this muffler. Suspension bushings will be due to replacement in a year or so.

I dealt with muffler issues on my 190E 2.6. Patches don't work. Well, mine worked for 2 days before the pressure blew it.
My advice? Buy a generic straight steel muffler section (~5" long) at an auto parts store (a few bucks $3?). Assuming you can't slide it like a sleeve over the whole, cut it longitudinally, put the two pieces over the hole (hopuefully the whole is small enough to be covered by one of the halves) buy two U-bolts and tighten the living crap out of them.
Bottomline, you want a mechanical patch, not some crappy plaster bullshit or whatever they sell. That is my experience. YMMV.
Good luck, man.

My brother's godfather sold his '90 535i a little over a year ago for about $12k. It was better than immaculate -- even with ~100k miles, you'd be pressed to find anything wrong with it. He bought it new doing Euro Delivery (the full 6 months too -- and he put ~10k miles on in Europe!).
It was an amazing car...
