Looks like you're happy with at least half your fleet.

I need more defined characteristics. Does it have to have more than two seats? Do you really want to spend the full 60K, or would you rather spend half that?

If you want to spend the coin and you do not need four seats, it's hard to argue with a 987S.

Clean 06 CayS in the low 50's. (or a boxster for the 'vert fan)

if you need a 7 seater, sounds like you 'might' need vestigial seats in the rear, too.

CPO 911.

It is getting harder and harder to configure a reasonable Atom for < $60K, though - mine was $65K when I bought it and would now cost $85K and heading towards $90K.

Meh. After trying mightily to talk myself into one, I've come to the inexeroable conclusion that CPO 911s are just an unappealing value proposition. Yes, they are fun. Yes, they are cool. Yes, they are Porsches. But do you really want to drop 50K on a 2003 911? I don't.

so what does that leave you with because you and TD are in the demographic where you guys would like to have the back seat area 'just in case'.

i'm curious as to your thought process on this.

I'm betwixt and between on the four-seat versus 2-seat thing. My father lives with us, so we have access to our old, e46 wagon in addition to our 5 wagon. That might make a two-seater as our second car more feasible. But the practical side of me says with one--and we hope another--child, it makes sense for both parents to have the capability to pick up the children from wherever at the spur of the moment.

This considerations swing me back to the 3 convertible. But, having had now three 3 series cars, the idea bores me a bit. I'd love a 911 and it would solve--while the children are small--the problem. But way too pricey.

I'd get the upcoming S2000 SC, remove the rear spoiler, and replace the front bumper cover with a normal one.

Oh, this is an easy one. . . get a new Jeep Rubicon, then spend the remaining $30k to upgrade it with bigger tires, lift, winch, etc. etc. etc.

Hm, $60k for a fun car? I'd look at something REALLY fun and impractical if you already have the practical bases covered.

The Atom (though it looks a bit pricey now).
A super 7 type car such as Caterham CSR w/ 260hp Cosworth engine (http://www.caterham.co.uk/assets/html/showroom/csr.html)
Lotus Elise
S2000
MX-5 (maybe the MS MX-5 when they come out with it)
RX8 + gas money
Boxster S
