Apparently it also maintains all prior existing functionality, and a long press on one of the buttons flips it into Car Play mode.
I did this with me 2011 BMW 1series. There is an intermediate module that goes behind the dashboard and allows you to toggle between (in my case) Wireless Android Auto, or the original BMW I-Drive system. All I-Drive and steering wheel controls work in both modes. Its a great option to keep everything stock.

For my 991.2 PCM that already had Carplay - all of the Android Auto software was embedded but the capability was coded out. I had the coding enabled, so now it has native AA as well.

I've been thinking of this on my 997.1

I am favoring doing it as the original radio/nav unit I have (from 2006) is less than stellar in performance now.

I'd obviously be ALL OVER this if I weren't about to sell the car.

That would be really nice. Given how long BMW sat on their collective butts to get Bluetooth support rolled out for the E46 generation (and how many times they tried to fix it before finally getting it right) I don't think there's a snowball's chance in...

I was working with BavAuto to get updated map DVDs a few years after BMW discontinued them after the 2015 release. The map manufacturer wanted a guarantee of at least a few hundred copies. It wouldn't have been that hard for them to do - they already had the software to create CarinDB discs from their current map database. But Bavarian folded and ECS didn't seem to have any interest.

At one time there was an independent project to write software to convert maps from TomTom format to CarinDB, but it stalled without a useful result (AFAIK).

Suncoast started a waitlist for it a month or so ago. https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/sku997pccm.html

Many 997.2 owners are wanting Porsche to offer one for it as well. Other than adding Apple CarPlay I do not think PCM 3.0 really needs.

I had my Nav maps updated to the latest offered, 2019 and it was a nice improvement. The unit did require a firmware update before it would accept the latest maps.

.2 is running PCM 3.0 and allegedly there were some wiring harness changes. Apparently there were also three versions of PCM 3.0 offered during .2 production to complicate matters. Who knows…

Ah, that makes sense on PCM 3.0. And it’s less critical since those cars already had Bluetooth support (esp if you can still get somewhat recent maps).

Car & Driver published an article about it today.

Bluetooth support via PCM 3.0 is phone only. Unable to stream music. In my opinion that is more important today than being able to carry on a phone conversation.
