Pure speculation: the driver floored it and lost control, killing himself and his passenger. Perhaps he got in the back seat after the crash trying to escape?

But that's pure speculation on my part. For what it's worth, my understanding of the Model S door latches (and I think they've stayed the same through the whole run) is that the front doors have an electric actuator that functions in normal operation, but that when the power is cut, a longer harder pull on the same handle will activate the emergency mechanical release. So the only reason that you wouldn't be able to operate the front door is if it were jammed or stuck. The rear doors are different, for whatever reason; the handle is electrically operated, but the emergency mechanical release is actually in the carpet, below the seats. This always struck me as stupid, but I suppose it might be necessary b/c of child safety locks, and it's actually not as stupid as the Model 3, *which doesn't have a mechanical release for the rear doors.* It does for the front doors (and people frequently mistake it for the actual, daily door handle), but not for the rear. Honestly, as much as I like and defend various aspects of the Tesla design, the whole door handle thing is just as bad as the lack of a rear view mirror adjustment switch, and potentially a lot less safe. Please enjoy this forum post about the issue, where anyone daring to question the safety of this design is essentially called an idiot (and presumably $TSLAQ). https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/thre...y.98748/page-8 |

I don't understand how doors that can only be operated electrically are legal? And I also don't understand how it's acceptable to separate the backup lever from the primary?

Of course, Tesla isn't the only one to do this--remember that story about the guy that got stuck in his C5 when the battery died and he spent hours in the garage? |

Ah, my bad.
Also apparently it's not an isolated incident. And at least one guy died as a result. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ette/71053474/ |

This is a "Fuck Tesla" post because Tesla has put a ton of effort into unleashing a deadly technology on an non-consenting population and doing just about dick to ensure it's only used in a safe manner.
The idiot photographed riding in the back of a driverless Tesla in the Bay Area was arrested. He has an Instagram account showing himself doing so...including a post of doing so with his wanted picture because of course he does. I would imagine this Instagram account will go dark pretty soon, but worth checking the post: https://www.instagram.com/p/COtTvoPjchr/

This particular jackass, however, is well beyond the scope of those bad messages. He's just a reckless douchebag. https://www.thedrive.com/news/40591/...g-in-back-seat |
