Local Subaru dealer emailed me that they just got in a BRZ 6MT and asked if I wanted to test drive it. So I emailed him back and asked if I could come up now which he said yes.

So I get up there and asked for the guy who who sent the email. The guy was some young person being escorted by an older salesman. The young guy barely spoke english so the older guy explained they just got it in so it is being prepped so not available for a few hours. He then precedes to tell me they don't let people test drive them anyhow. I said that is not what the young guy told me and he just looks at me. Ugh..yeah that's very annoying. I got a similar runaround when I wanted to test drive a VW GTI last year. Since I was in the area, I ended up going across the street to the Porsche dealer and after a minutes of chatting basically tossed me the keys to a 120k Taycan and said "have fun". I almost wanted to drive it over to the VW dealer and say something, but I knew the irony would be lost on them.

It’s part of what keeps me in higher end vehicles. I hate most dealerships, but BMW/Porsche seem to treat you a bit better. Especially if you are a repeat customer. Doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a good deal, but it feels less dehumanizing.

yeah I guess the difference between luxury and mainstreams dealers. Only time I have been able to drive a car without a saleperson is recently with telsa.

Agreed. I had a similar situation many years ago. I wanted to test drive the then fairly new C6 Corvette and the guy lied and wasted my time. Went to Porsche and they gave me the keys to a 987S and told me to be back in 20 minutes.
