There are many options and possibilities. You could also add a commander unit that’s not a flash. Some of the cheap Chinese stuff, like Yongnuo, is pretty good, too.

But I do miss having the on-camera pop up. Built in. Nice to add a little fill when needed. No extra gear to carry, batteries to charge, etc.

Yes. I probably will too. But, more often than not, the lens casts a shadow over the flash area.

The smallest flash unit I have doesn't require batteries, but it's really only adequate on the 5500. (The D5500 also has its own pop up flash.) It's a very decent little camera, and my go-to when I want to travel light. I pair it with the 16-80 2.8-4 DX lens and it does quite well.

Edit: the little speed light (SB-300) does take batteries. Just never seems to go through them.
