The smallest flash unit I have doesn't require batteries, but it's really only adequate on the 5500. (The D5500 also has its own pop up flash.) It's a very decent little camera, and my go-to when I want to travel light. I pair it with the 16-80 2.8-4 DX lens and it does quite well. Edit: the little speed light (SB-300) does take batteries.
