Air compressors ... need advice !!
I want to get a new air compressor ... it's gotta have wheels and I'd like it to be an upgrade from what I have ... mine is so loud when filling up with air. It says it has 2hp and 11 gallon capacity ... being it is probably a good 17 or 18 yrs old maybe the new ones are better even if the numbers are lower ?!? I have no idea.
Have compressors with today's technology gotten better ?? The only uses for it will be: 1) Inflate tires on the cars 2) clean the interior of dust on the cars If you can recommend something better I would appreciate it ... also the dollar limit is around $150 to $200 ... unless someone suggests that I really need to go more Thanks for your help !! |

The only thing that really matters for this is noise level. Make sure it's an oiled compressor.

You might want to check for threads of on garagejournal.com. But they might all be overkill.
For tires, I got a Viar 88P a few months back and OMFG, it's the greatest thing ever. Super fast AND super quiet. $50 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ASY23I/

The only way you are getting a quiet compressor anywhere near that size for under $200 is to put it farther away when you use it and buy some longer hoses.

The Viair is amazing, but I dont really have anything specific to recommend if you're looking for something more heavy duty. I have the Viair and it's pretty great.

I bought this (and accessories) for $100. It does the job, it's light and it's loud. Didn't know anything about compressors and oiled vs. non-oiled when I bought.

AF, back sometime in the 1990's it was demonstrated to me how much static electricity is generated from an air blow gun. Chances of frying something in your dash might be slim to none, but I would not risk it to remove dust. Thousands of volts can be generated. There are ESD air guns to eliminate the voltage chance, but why risk it?

The risk is probably very minimal. but why invite problems?
Everything in the car should be grounded, but there is no real path for excess voltage. I had to use an air gun for some issues I had with the Volvo transmission control unit and ABS module when I was singling the rear axles. I used my metal air gun, but I attached an alligator clip wire to the nozzle and connected the other end of the wire to the chassis.

I noticed it's I only 1.47 CFM. Is that really that fast? There are quite a few others that are faster 2.5 CFM or more, like the Smittybilt 2780. |
