autoweek: E60m5 (versus) 612 scaglietti

it was not a direct comparison, but it was obvious to do so, just looking at the on paper numbers.

both battleships are going to be about 4000 pounds.

m5:
5.0 litre v10
500 hp (8500rpm redline)
369ft-lbs

612:
5.7 litre v12
525 hp
433ft-lbs

the ferrari 612 is expected to do the dance in 4.2 seconds.....anyone care to guess why they only project the M5 to do the dance in 4.7 seconds?

BMW tends to be conservative on 0-60. Every magazine that I saw was able to get under 5 on the S54 roadster/coupe, and BMW's numbers were over.

Maybe their testers like clutches too much.

both are good points.

it's true that when GM nerds got the z06 to 3.9 seconds they neglected to use the clutch.

as far as SMG, it could be that with 7 forward gears that there is more than one shift to attain 60mph? i always thought the E46m3 SMG was consistently as fast as the 6 speed manual.

With a "traditional" manual, an extra shift before 60 would add a little less than half a second (if the clutch were used). If the car was an SMG, an extra shift would probably add an insignificant amount of time (maybe a tenth?).

IIRC, the SMG M3 has actually tested a bit slower than a standard M3 in 0 to 60 times because of the launch. Even that special launch technique (jamming the lever forward while the brake and gas are on) doesn't seem to work as well as a traditional clutch.

Around a track is a different story--I'd expect the SMG to do better.

SMG might be faster around a track. but it's still not a guarantee.

now that i think about it, the cars are actually in the same "class". big engines. seat 4 comfortably. probably just a $150,000 price difference, right?

(i'm guessing the next m5 is going to be $95,000).

I wouldn't think it would jump that much

my guess is likely closer to $85k after typically equipped options but then close to $90k after taxes.

based on the 6 series pricing which is about $75k out the door. then add onto that the M-spec premium (that engine ain't cheap and it's a nice dry sump design). so, base it at $79k.

then add options to $85k.

voila.

that's my projection.

90k after taxes to drive it home.
