I still don't know what is a "sensible" replacement; the most sensible thing would be to keep a Golf R with a new clutch, but it sounds like Josh wants something different.
When Josh brought up the e46 m3, I had to chime in with the 340i. Older M cars do not make sense as daily drivers to me, they are more for tinkering/projects or investment at this point. Today's slightly used bmw's are good value as their resale values aren't strong. The closest car I have had to the e46 m3 is the 340i. My two ran on exactly the same tires in the same sizes. The f30 interior is marginally bigger if at all, maybe the back seat. The control inputs are lighter, the frame is stronger/stiffer and the suspension is better sorted in the f30. Even the xdrive version rolls less and holds more g's on a turn; on the same tires. It brakes better and is near silent on the highway. Horsepower is similar but the torque and mpg's are better on the 340i. Stock to stock, I don't think the e46 m3 could catch it. The 340i xdrive is about 300lbs heavier than the e46 m3 coupe (lighter than the 'vert JST pos-12ted). Of that close to 200lbs is the xdrive. That leaves an extra 100 or so lbs of weight; and sure the dimensions are a few inches bigger. I don't feel this "bloat" when I'm driving (see above: light control inputs, better sorted suspension, better brakes, low end torque). The car feels lighter than an e90 to drive even at the same weight (I also had a 335i xdrive 2011). The 5er, in comparison, feels a thousand pounds heavier, even though it's only another 300. As to reliability; I've had better experience with porsche. I hope the 340i will be better than the 535i n55. I've had some issues, but previous owner did some stuff as well. |

There is the obvious choice although it seems much like the G8 GPX the SS manual is starting to see some love in the used market already.

The new 330i is 3646 pounds.
No six cylinder and no AWD. Just a puny little four cylinder. And it weighs that much. Also: still not fun. https://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/...DD04D070E3E67F So. The world keeps winning. The three series as we know it is finally dead.

The three series as we knew and loved it has been dead for a long, long time.
