Great post. The M3 looks amazing especially with the low miles.

My buddy still has the '04 STi he ordered in 2003. I think it has 35k on it and is perfect other than needing a little cleaning outside (has had clearbra since new and it's the old stuff that yellowed over time). Has to be one of the lowest mileage never-modified STis on the road.

It's for sale...

I thought of buying an sti in early 04 but couldn't get a dealer to let me test drive one - ended up ordering the m3 instead.

Never had an STi, but we did have a WRX wagon in 04. How is that ten years ago?

Before I bought the wagon in late 2001, I managed to talk a Subaru dealer into letting me test drive a WRX. The salesman weighed about 400 pounds and screamed at me whenever I went over 4k RPM or if I tried to accelerate more quickly than a walking pace. And he told me how lucky I was to get to drive one at all because they didn't want to put any miles on their cars before they sold.

A couple years before that, my wife bought a new car over the internet, sort of (carsdirect.com was fucking awesome for a while in CA). JST just bought a new car over the internet, sort of (Tesla is awesome today...in some states).

10 years ago last month, I found the brand new RX-8 I wanted by searching Mazda's US inventory online using my search criteria including distance, colors, options, etc. I can almost do the same today with Mazda. When I bought my Focus ST nearly a year ago, I could only see 5 dealers at a time and would have to click through each individual car to find out how it was optioned.

Dealer tactics are just as shitty as ever. How far we've come in 10 years. And haven't.

Both Subi dealers had the STI in the showroom behind a velvet rope like it was something special (IIRC one even had some sort of elevated platform) not that you'd ever know since they wouldn't let you drive it.

What Clyde said. By the time I bought the WRX the bloom was off the rose and a test drive was no problem. But the amount of wheedling and cajoling I had to do to drive a *used* E46 M3 when those were relatively new was insane.

It's hard to say enough good things about the Tesla process, but with limited financing options, limited inventory for immediate delivery, and no real trade in capability, it's not very scalable for the mass market. That is not to excuse the craptacular model that other manufacturers use.
