I dropped a scooter with C on the back... Yes, after years of riding 1.2L displacement motors around NYC without an incident, I went down on a 100 or 125cc on Barbados. It was a rainy night, I was taking it super slow, the rain was in my eyes (no good helmet or visor; and too dark for sunglasses). Slightly lost, I saw my turn just a beat too late. There was zero traffic, I had plenty of room, and was at low speeds (teens in mph); looked easy. Nope, the front wheel went down like it hit ice. It was sooo slick that scooter, C and I all slid across the entire intersection side by side, demonstrating Newton's First Law. Even without protective gear, Cara had a small hip bruise and I needed a small bandaid on my elbow. That was the whole extent of injuries for sliding 25ft or so. Scooter got scratched and a dent when it hit the opposing sidewalk edge. I did get an oil/diesel seeming stain on the back of my shirt from sliding; it never came off in the wash. I surmise that we hit an oil slick or diesel mixed with water when initiating the turn but who knows? At least we were at bicycle pace.

I saw someone lay down a scooter in Ocean City this year. Someone pulled out in front of him, he tried to avoid, locked up the wheel and went down.

He wasn’t wearing a full face helmet. Got really bad rash on his face; scraped deep. Good looking guy, and young. I suspect that scar will be with him forever.

As far as I could tell he didn’t do anything wrong. The other driver didn’t see him, and then ran off. I didn’t catch the plate, just that it was a black CRV.

Apparently one Bermudian dies a month on a scooter, on average. And that doesn’t include tourists. On an island of 60,000 people, that seems like a lot.

My cousin was killed in a scooter accident in Bermuda a number of years ago. She was on her honeymoon riding separate scooters with her husband when a car pulled out in front of her and she hit it. She was transported to the hospital and died there.

That's awful to hear.... My Bermuda scooter experience is from two decades ago. At the time (being in my twenties) it seemed like a reasonably safe place to learn; traffic was light, slow and orderly; not like most other islands. Perhaps it was always this dangerous and I didn't perceive it or it's gotten crowded and faster over twenty years...

I can see how these small scooters can be dangerous in overly crowded regions.

The one and only scooter experience for me prior to buying my own was when we were on vacation in Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island while on assignment in Fall River, MA. Luckily, nothing bad happened to us.

Sorry to hear about that -- sad.

I haven't been to Bermuda, but I have seen Renault Twizys in Europe. They look dumb on the road...

My god I am sorry to hear that, her poor husband must have been devastated

Returning to a car that has roughly 20 times the power of the Twizy was an experience.
