At least this article discusses the context of the challenge (most articles have simply referred to it being funded by DARPA and left it at that).

Hey, SUVs make sense in this application. I am sure they need a lot of equipment to accomplish the objective and the box-like space of an SUV would make it easier to work on. Pretty remarkable improvement from last year to this year.
