Decided to forget about the VW and did some shopping yesterday.
After looking at about 10 cars varying from small Toyota sedans to even an H3 Hummer, he decided to get this:  Haven't had a chance to drive it, but reading from various sites, it's ranked pretty high for quality and reliability, as well as driving experience. I believe it's a good choice for him and his g/f. Thanks again for all the great advice !!
