Decided to forget about the VW and did some shopping yesterday.

After looking at about 10 cars varying from small Toyota sedans to even an H3 Hummer, he decided to get this:



Haven't had a chance to drive it, but reading from various sites, it's ranked pretty high for quality and reliability, as well as driving experience.

I believe it's a good choice for him and his g/f.

It's the AWD version of the CX-5 Sport.

There was a Z4 for sale at the same dealer he got it. When I inquired the owner about the price, he said "About 10k".

My interest piqued, but as I approached the car and looked through the driver's window, my heart sank.

It was an automatic....

But it might be an interesting idea for you to shop older 2 series convertibles to update/replace your E46...

I don't think I'll ever replace my first BMW.

I am, however, still on the hunt for a reasonably-priced NC MX-5....

Yeah, he has a history of buying crappy cars. When we convinced him that you have to ante up for a good-running car and saw the CX-5, he changed his mind.
