Mercedes-Benz typically puts huge dealer cash on their S, SL, CL class cars... I heard that they had almost $15,000 in the trunk of some of them recently. No surprise that they are dying to sell this 2 year old $140k car!

Anybody with that kind of cash would most likely opt for the new body style.

I agree. I doubt many people in this price range are int he "buy and hold for a long time" category, but if one were, this would not be a bad car. The new style is not universally loved, and as far as I know not much chnaged for the 600.

But I think there's a good chunk of "buy and hold" buyers for SLs... At least around here. My step-grandma drove hers since '85 when it was new until she died earlier this year...

Huge.
When I came to the US (5/93), the friends we stayed with (they are like family) had a brand new Town Car (hers) and an '86 420 SEL (his). The MB was BY FAR the better car. To this day, I have a soft spot for those SEL's when I see a well-kept sample on the road. |

I may have mentioned this, but my wife's father has a MINT 2001 (I think) SL500 with the AMG package. I think it has 20k miles on it.
It's a nice car, but SO outdated compared to modern offerings. It's not even particularly fast. He loves it, though. |
