Udvar-Hazy Museum. Part of the Smithsonian Air and Space setup. They run buses from IAD to the muesum and back.
Of course, this means leaving the secure area and having to go through that mess again. http://nasm.si.edu/udvarhazy/

It will now be known as "The Pinecone School of Reading Comprehension." ... ZBB, I would suggest an iPad and charger. There's a decent indoor go kart track that might be an option, but check their calendar to make sure they aren't booked. Not much to do out that way. A few shopping centers. You probably have enough time on the way back to take a cab or shuttle into DC and get back.

"Downtown" Reston is a short cab ride away and provides a decent place to get some fresh air, a bite to eat, and a walk. It's a sort of quasi-town center space/outdoor shopping mall. Other than clyde's idea about the go-kart track, there's not much else. There's a Wegman's a short ride up 28, if you want to buy some groceries. It's right next to a Mini/BMW dealer and Ferrari/Maserati of Washington, which has in the past proved to be a convenient family outing. There's also a racing gear store out there (O.G. Racing), but it's not worth a side trip and you can get most of their stuff on the Internet. |
