I'm sure the tires are having a major impact on the car's feel and any harshness. A slightly less aggressive tire is likely to be quieter and comfier without giving up anything you need on the street.

80k miles, a couple small dents, rock chips on nose and too much Armor All (any Armor All is too much, though, really, right? Except for that upholstery spot remove bren turned me on to.) are the only care and condition concerns beyond the dif?

Worst case replacement of the LSD is maybe $1,200 in parts? I'd probably do some searching for internet diagnostics on the noise, too.

Right. I am not turning it down at all. As I said, I was pretty happy with it. I just want to see in daylight and drive it in a country road at more than 45mph.

Nothing about it scares me about it repair/maintenance-wise. I do have tools, a lift, it's a 3rd car, and it's a Miata, so no reason to not personally tackle pretty much anything that could come up.

That doesn't sound like the miata I'd like. If you're planning auto-xing, go for it. For weekend roaming, I can't see wanting RE71's. The LSD & the sports suspension & sway sound good, but that shouldn't be a hard spec to find. Do you have the luxury of time shopping?

I imagine finding the sport suspension, LSD and heated seats is going to be a tough combo to find. Tires can be changed, and I bet you can sell the RE-71s for good money and put something more streetable on the car.

Arranged to check it out in daylight in a country road with my wife when he gets back from a trip. Will probably close the deal then unless I find out it's missing all gears above 3rd or something equally ridiculous.

Well, got a chance to drive it this AM in proper roads and on the stock wheels. It drove great. We spoke on price and basically it's down to whether I want his AutoX wheels & tires for $500.

The car felt plenty firm, grippy, and more comfortable with the stock setup, so I think I will pass on it and save the $500 and put it towards fixing a few dents and re spraying the front bumper.

I hope to come to an agreement on price this weekend.

The only annoying bit is that he has a lien on it, and it appears he needs the sale proceeds to pay off the lien. So I need to figure out how to do that.

That takes a bit of faith on both parties.

If the lien is held by a local bank it's not so bad. Go there together, pay it off, and get the release.

I had to do that w/ my M5. Paid the bank in cash bills, they released the title immediately. Any other payment form would have taken time to clear

Alternatively, you can cut two cashiers checks, one to his bank for the payoff amount, and one to him for the balance. Get a notarized bill of sale and take the car.

Congrats almost !!

I'd keep the wheels and tires if the tires are in good condition and you plan on tracking the car, why wreck the stock tires and wouldn't you be able to get the $500 back by selling them if you don't use them.

That Miata is going to be a real fun car plus I like the fact that you won't have to worry about every little ding and paint chip which can add a lot of stress to car ownership.
