(or, if they didn't grow up in privileged households, their kids almost certainly do now)

I raised half the money for my $3,000 Mazda GLC through summer jobs, etc. My parents contributed so they wouldn't have to drive me back and forth to college in their VW Thing.

So to me these are very interesting threads.
I had my first car given to me (a new RX7 GSL-SE) in 1985 but then every car after that I bought and insured on my own though I was able to use the RX7 money as a down payment to the next car (a 1986 Trans Am). My father learned his lesson, don't buy teenagers sports cars, I cannot even tell you the amount of tires, clutches, even a transmission I put that poor Mazda through but I did have to pay for everything that car needed and boy did I work my ass off to pay for it.

They did--a manual. It's the car I learned to drive on. I think it ignited my love of convertibles--despite how horrible it was to drive!

so what does that mean? My parents could afford to buy me a car but made me pay half of their hand me down car yet my wife parents could(should) not yet bought her and her siblings cars. We have a disagreement currently related to this for our boys

My parents were pretty eccentric, for sure. But, it was the 70s--so granola/norm core all around.

Everyone's different. I'm spoiling my kids by buying their cars and paying for their insurance so they don't have to work a shitty job and so they aren't even more sleep deprived than they currently are. And because I can comfortably do so.

By the way I was not implying one should or should not, I was just sharing my experience. =)
