i am looking at the reality of trying to get a manual 911 at the moment.

it's exceedingliy difficult.

between normal supply constraints, pile on COVID19 on top of that plus microchip shortages and whatever.

it's an insane market out there.

I have a car salesman friend that started working at a Porsche store a few months ago. Spoke with him about what it's like there a couple weeks ago. "Insane" does not being to cover it.

At least PDK is an objectively good transmission. Unlike, say, Tiptronic. I still don’t understand people who pay money for a 993 with a 4HP22.

Yeah, I get it, and I certainly understand why you might have to settle for PDK if you wanted a 911.

I just wouldn’t buy the 911 if I had to choose between a PDK 911 and not a 911. It would drive me crazy literally every day that the car had the wrong transmission. It would make an angry every time I drove it.

But like I said, I’m obviously way in the minority on this.

So a 992 with 5k miles and an MSRP of $140k lists for $137k. It sells in a day.

Cash has become trash. Meaningless...

I'm extra angry because it touched my motorcycle shopping as well. I had a sort of understanding with a private party for my next bike. Due to distance between us and his upcoming track day, we put a day's pause. He decided to be a good sport and let me know of the track day. I decided to be a good sport and did not swoop in before his day; thought I'd pick it up the day after. After the track day, he decided the agreed upon price was not good enough. Ruined my weekend, I was really looking forward to taking hold of that bike today.

the reason why I am still actively considering a CPO AMG GT-S/R is along the lines of JST's opinion --if PDK is the main option (since the ZL1 is a manual) --why not look at everything on the board, including the Taycan and "other".

that being written, the 992S powerplant is f*cking amazing. and with PDK the car is like a missile.

*just saying. it still has serious appeal with the PDK.

Used to be AMG's depreciated and Porsches depreciate less... Now porsches appreciate, not sure how amg's do but I'd be wary of how much value they'll end up losing. Even more so with JLR (I find myself eyeing the new Defender).

I'm with JST. The only reason I have the 991.2 is because they offered a 3 pedal manual.
If a manual isn't a requirement, what about a c8, r8, the am gt is cool, m8, v12 aston, lots of cool options

Just for comparison, did a spirited drive in a well sorted R8 4.2 with the gated shifter. The exhaust roar sounds awesome (aftermarket). The car handles on rails but I’m not sure if that’s because of the Ohlins post-fix for the failed magnetic dampers.

If I could eat a 5.2 with a gated shifter, I would have no complaints, I think.

Part of the goodness of the 992S is the drama free turbo powerband. But this lacks the snap and crackle of the AMG GT or the drama of the R8 as it winds through the powerband.

To your thoughts, I’m also looking at the AM Vantage. Because you’re right, once you relent and give up a manual, there are lots of interesting cars.

Not sure I follow you on the AM Vantage- it has (and still is i think) always been available with a manual ? Having driven one once (a manual 2007 model), it reminded me a lot of driving an e92 M3. Similar layout, weight, transmission feel, etc. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if they are more reliable than the m3. And of course way better looking. Might as well throw in a v8 F-type into the mix as well...
