I test drove an SQ5 just before my macan turbo purchase. It is not in the same class in terms of handling and feel. Just a powerful, bar riding, mediocre audi handling thing. Sure it's peppier than a Macan S (or a GTS though not a turbo), but there is nothing nice about its drive. More space, but the q5 had that to begin with.

Interesting.

I will drive the Allroad when it arrives.

I’m not sure I can see buying the SQ5 over the X3 M40i. But, I have some strong motivation to leave the BMW dealers since I’ve moved to my new place. They are far away and mediocre at best. Porsche and Audi are all about a mile or two away from my house and better run. So, trying to wrap my mind around a brand change after 20+ years of owning BMWs....

I don’t get that. You’ve already given up ultimate control. And the downshift happens so fast that accelerating for even a fraction of a second in the higher gear is going to be faster.

You bounce off the rev limiter in a manual because it’s not worth briefly shifting up and then down again. Bouncing off the limiter in a DCT car doesn’t gain you anything.

Mind you, there is very little separation between the high end automatics and a DCT these days. And the way that DCTs have been getting dropped from lineups is indicative.

2018 F31 has just cropped up near me...certified. Slightly strange ownership record, but all local to the dealer. Certified.

Not Msport but well-optioned otherwise. I was hoping for a better sound system, because my kid likes to blast music in the car and it taxes bad audio...

The price is in line with what dealers are asking for 2018 A4 Avants as well.

That's a nice-ish car. I think an F31 is a good bet, perhaps wait for one with HK and track handling package.

True. And, now I realize I’ve never driven the 4-cylinder.

Worried I might hate it...I should drive this and see.

On my short drives, the 4cyl was fine. It's peppy and does the job.

Thank you. Good to hear your perspective. I had pretty much decided on the new Audi Allroad, so this throws a wrench in that plan. New Allroad has more oomph, and is much better optioned. But it’s $20K more. So that makes the lightly used BMW wagon compelling.

Now to figure out whether the Audi’s new battery gizmo is sourced from Samsung, which appears to be the problem with the new X3/X5 hybrids...

I drove a rwd 330i sedan around a pseudo auto-x track a few times (new body/g20?). Did not accelerate to highway speeds, but in a short course, combined with the 8-speed, it didn't *feel* much slower than my 340i manual x-drive. Of course a rwd sedan is lighter than an xdrive wagon, but the current 2.0 is pretty peppy.

I think either the 3er or the allroad will be good. With your car history, I don't think you'll be happy with a VW. Flip side, Macans are a lot of money and remember that everything porsche costs more. More for oil changes, more for tires, etc
