The question is whether JV would proactively replace it with one that won't fail before the new one fails.

Seems pointless given that it has a fail-soft failure mode, unless he’s planning to take it on along trip right around when it’d be expected to start failing.

He's time constrained. The RX-8 is going to take up his time for a while.

Yeah. I wouldn't proactively replace it.
I guess 30k is probably about right. Lot of car for the money. It's interesting as a replacement for the Mazdaspeed and the boxster. |

Did you ever see the clutch?
If a rivet (well, 2 of them) failed it should have been a no brainer for your dealer to get the claim processed. When I worked at a Dodge dealer we had this happen, but this was before digital camera days. We had to get the zone rep to drive over to see the bad clutch disk to OK it. Dodge only paid for the disc and labor, I talked the customer into a new pressure plate and throw out bearing "because we were already there" labor wise

Also, wow, R's are expensive. That sounds like a lot of money for that car. If we sold our GTI, not that C would, it'd be in the teens, probably mid-teens, late-2015 with 36k miles. Still under 5/60 powertrain though that may be partially void due to chipping. |
