I recommend them even to people who already have a GPS collar - most GPS collars have extremely limited battery life (think days or even hours away from home). AirTags last a couple years. It's pretty unlikely that you'll be caught out by a dead AirTag battery.

We have two Apple AirTags. One is assigned to my iPhone the other to my wife’s iPhone. Right now they are in our cars but when we travel they go into our luggage to track the bags in transit.
