Not in the news. My VIN is covered by several very nasty engine issues with no fix in sight yet. (There are TSBs out with only stopgap measures. And folks who are already waiting 3 months for new engines.)

There are many engines in this VIN sweep that may eventually need to be swapped out if they don’t find a less invasive way to fix the issues. The Mazda warranty is pretty short—although these problems may be covered by the somewhat longer power train warranty.

So, I decided I just don’t want that exposure when I’d really like to go down to one fun/practical car anyway and resale values are high. My Mazda was so low mileage, it may have never manifested the issues while under warranty. Still, I bought it to be the relatively bulletproof low-maintenance car I could hold onto long term and perhaps give to my son for college and so forth. That scenario no longer looked so rosy.

If I were super fiscally responsible, I’d go ahead and find the starter car for my son and sell the 2 as well while its value is high.

But, that would dampen my spirits too much.

Who would have thought the 2 would be the easiest car to live with longer term? (Knock wood.) Although, as we know, it’s really year 7 when the BMW maintenance fun begins. I am at 5 with only 17k miles right now. Tick, tick.

Edit: On the ride to school this am in the 2, my kid said, “Mom, you should just keep this car. You love it and I love it, and we both love the convertible aspect of it.” Yep, we do. And someone is very excited there is no alternative now to his driving it. (Ack.)

Wow, like Alan, I didn't see this coming. Doing some searches I see that your anxieties were buried in another thread. Bummer.

Spring is here, just drive the 2 until you get around to finding another cx5 substitute daily. I'm not sure I would have done the same move of cashing out based on concerns if my vehicle itself had not exhibited anything, but I would have considered it for sure.

Understood. And I probably would have seen it through to the end of the power train warranty were it not for the kid car issue/expense looming at the end of the summer.

I really don't want to support three cars. And fully supporting two cars when the family car (until now, the Mazda) goes away every other week is not ideal either. Nor was it i(in my spoiled person's take) sustainable/desirable that I sell the 2 and keep the potentially troublesome Mazda as my ONLY car.

Process of elimination eliminated the Mazda from the future scenario.

Hence the sale while the Mazda value was still high.

What's next is a question. Maybe the ideal is, as JST suggests, to keep the 2 and a cheaper hatchback thing to go back and forth.

Or maybe I bite the bullet and sell the 2 and get something fun to drive that has more functionality. 4 series gran coupe with bucktooth grille?

I'm still wondering what the better option for a kid car is than the mazda?

Sure. But not the-top-of-the-line turbo CX-5 with dubious future.

What about the Honda small SUV’s, they make reliable cars and the maintenance is reasonable.

Could well be an answer. Delving into how to insure him/the cars, it might behoove me not to have any expensive cars in the garage--at least until he turns 18.

If he has a license, you'll have to insure him on the 240 unless you have a different car.

There are 80 million ways that could make it more or less expensive and different carriers will assign and weight different drivers to different cars in different ways. For some carriers, it may not matter much how expensive the car is, but what their claim history is with them.

I'd also highly recommend getting many quotes (like a dozen or more) on each scenario. Good chance you'll find something reasonable...comparatively. With a teenage boy, best be prepared to pay up.
