Does that sound right?

E65 comes standard with rear side airbags. They are mentioned in the safety features description, etc. When you get the car, you'll see stickers on the rear door jambs saying that rear side airbags are deactivated. AFAIK, there is no option to have them activated from factory. So far so good...

But a simple software activation it is not. 2 hours of labour per door to activate them, need to take apart the door and physically connect power to the airbags, 4 hours at $99 per hour... For a "standard" safety feature. Same on E39. Am I wrong to be a little pissed about it?

That sounds really strange. I wonder if it is a result of some national safety legislation somewhere that got carried over into all cars for ease-of-assembly?

It's probably some sort of safety regulation. My 330i has rear airbags that are disabled from the factory. The dealer didn't recommend enbaling them if children under 12 yo would be riding in the back seat.

They told me there would be no charge to enable them later.

I know about the safety thing, I would have to sign a release of sorts if I wanted the dealership to enable them... it's just that paying $200+tax per car to do that doesn't sit well with me.

Well, more like Indians than Canadians, most dealerships around GTA seem to be overrun by them. But yeah, this must be it.
