VW Vortex is rife with threads on this. It sounds like 16,000 miles is not an outlier for clutch failure on the Rs.

My 330 had 175k miles on the original clutch when JV replaced it and there was still a good amount of material left.

An 11:1 replacement ratio isn't so bad?

I replaced the clutch on the Mazdaspeed at ~ 170,000 miles. It still had plenty of material left.

Ugh.

Honestly I sort of thought "this is their thing" because of all the ppl that chip tune them. I didn't really expect that a car barely ever driven in anger would fail this fast.

The DSG clutches seem to be FAR more robust.
