It's lowered 1cm, and from what I have read the shocks and springs are the same. So my conclusion is that it was lower profile tires and sticky rubber. But if it turns out the suspension is entirely different and that was the key, then I'm screwed. I'll need to do suspension mods. Part of me wants to get the performance upgrade just in case there are suspension differences. But a) it's $5k, and b) it comes with bigger brakes that prohibit using 18" wheels. That seems undesirable as well. . Last edited by rumatt; 08-16-2018 at 02:41 PM. |

Given the roads you drive on, you do not want 20" wheels. You'll constantly be replacing them. Tesla wheels seem like they're made of papier mache.

On one hand, 19 sounds big. But it's 235/40-19. My e46 has 40 profile tires (245/40-18). So does the cayman on 18's. Maybe 19's with 40 ratio sidewall isn't so bad? But I'm inclined to declare that wanting the ability to run an 18" wheel is more than reasonable, and I will just live with the consequences. . Last edited by rumatt; 08-16-2018 at 07:35 PM. |

The 18's look good without the wheel covers on (which are absurdly ugly when on). Be sure to order the wheel cap kit -- its on backorder, so probably good to order now (site says at least 8 weeks). Basically everyone who gets the 18's takes the covers off pretty quick… Only $50
https://shop.tesla.com/us/en/product...l-cap-kit.html But the design for both the 19's and 20's was just too beautiful to pass up. With my non-Performance, I went with the 19's… Perhaps I'll buy a set of the 18's for snows, but I didn't get snows last winter -- which was the coldest here in 90 years...

By the way, did you use a referral code for your order -- just want to make sure you got free supercharging!
Also, if anyone else is thinking of ordering an S, X, or the Performance 3, you are eligible for free supercharging for life for orders placed by Sept 16 if you use a referral link. Orders after that supposedly only get a year of free supercharging… Here's my referral link if anyone needs it…. http://ts.la/matt7103

It's annoying that the Model 3 and the Model S don't have the same bolt pattern.
It looks like the Model 3 is 114.3 x 5, 64.1 mm center bore. That's the same size that Honda/Acura use, so at least there should be spare tire options out there. EDIT: Oh, ha ha, also Fords, including the dumb Escape Hybrid, the wheel for which I have in my basement since I needed the oddball tire for the Model S. EDIT: 155 70 18 looks like the right size. Seems like a lot less work to just carry a small tire repair (plug) kit. That'll cover you for any cases where you just get a puncture in the tread surface, which seems like the most likely scenario to happen out on the road.
