I'm almost in the same boat... While my '65 LandCruiser had a 3.9L I-6. Even though it had 125 HP and 209 Ft-lbs of torque, it was geared so low that it was a slug. And top speed in 3rd (the highest...) gear was ~70 (unless I was drafting a big-rig, where I once theoretically got it up to ~80).
On a side note, I just found this slideshow of a restored '65 TLC that was done for Toyota. The color of it after restoration was the same as my '65 (until I had it painted another color). Man I miss that old truck... http://www.tlc4x4.com/2000/Restorati...de_fj40-65.htm

You know how, whenever you see a gas station, you have to pull in and fill up, even if you are literally just pulling out of a different gas station? These tales may be apocryphal, but I hear tell of vehicles that can travel between entire cities without fear of running out of fuel.

Nope. 3 lane road (Rte 1) at a stoplight. I'm in the middle, he's in the right. About 500 feet ahead there is an off-ramp I need to take. The right lane effectively becomes an "exit only" lane that dissapears after the ramp (becomes a breakdown lane).
I need to get either in front of, or behind him. On green, I start slowly, assuming he will take off pretty quickly and I'll tuck in behind him. He doesn't. He is just average. That's fine, other than whoever is behind him feels compelled to tailgate him. That makes me go a little bit faster to try to get in front, at which point he hits the gas a bit, but not enough to shake the guy behind him, so I say fuck it, floor it and before he has a chance to realize what had happened I'm quite a bit in front of him and in the exit. Neither tried to race, I just cought him off-guard and surprised him. It was about 10pm at the time, and from the side, the V70R is at its most stealthy. Anyway, this was a while back when the R8 had just come out. It was the first time I saw one. |
