I love the manual 240s the best. So many good memories of driving my friend’s 240 when I needed a car (because mine was broken down so often).

Notwithstanding all the amusing racing stories of how they couldn't be shoved out of the way (but you could lean on them if you ran out of traction on the inside), they're just... So slow.

Exactly. Just ponderous. But so fun to drive as a manual. Like driving a John Deere on public roads.

The crazy thing is 240s aren't even that heavy. I watched one (which was admittedly modified but not really for weight reduction) roll across the scales at an SCCA event years ago and it was sub-2800lbs. Lighter than Clyde's RX-8.

I’ve driven a fair number of cars, but there was something about the E61 that made it feel like…the richest car I’ve ever driven? Maybe that’s not quite right. The most old-money car I’ve ever driven. Like, this is the kind of car that would be driven by titanically wealthy people.
It was a really nice car, suspension squishiness aside. That’s a spectacular example. Not sure I’d want to pay to keep one on the road now, and the idrive tech is now woefully out of date. But a very cool car. |

I think I know what you mean, there was something unique about how the E60/E61 felt - in particular in this unicorn combo of wagon + 6MT. I know a lot of people hated the looks but it drove pretty well and felt very different from F10 and G30. Also think (would need to research) BMW kept the E60 on lighter side before it put in weight in future generations.

(In the family) I know it’s was several thousand per year to keep it running well, but I love that car. Were it not for family need, I’d have no problem still driving it. It’s what I wanted the E wagon (at the time) to be but the E class was wallowy and only came with the wheezy v6. Now the E wagon is really the only choice. You could argue Audi, but there it’s either wheezy A4 based or ridiculous RS6 wagon which doesn’t seem compelling to be honest.
