You can’t seriously expect to run it that low regularly.
Its a 27% range difference, regardless of how far you like to run your tank down, those last 200 miles are pretty meaningful (assuming as you noted the issue is real and not toyota electronics conservatism)

450 /43.8 = 10.27 gallons is the same thing-ish.

She's going to run it down to what appears to be 1.5-2.0 gallons regardless. Whatever the amount of gas in the tank is usable, the shorter range means filling up 120ish miles earlier than the spec calls for. For my wife, that means significantly more fill ups in a given period of time and that's a big deal to her.

No, but we do get >15% less than the advertised range!

And that's if we ran it full to empty.

Does Tesla sell "Jerry cans" full of electrons to pour in if you run dry?

I really wish Elon would allow passing charge from one Tesla to another. That would be fun.

Where manufacturers set the low fuel limits is highly variable.
Definitely do it when new, and before the first tank of crap gas. With manufacturers adopting the California MPG / emission regs to meet changing federal regulations (until they actually improve MPG in the overall product line) we may end up with things like the BMW SULEV2 (at least in the E46 generation and similar) where the whole fuel system is one sealed piece from the filler neck to where the pressurized hardline leaves the back of the car. Live in a California-emission state and got crap gas and need to pull the pump to change it? You're SOL - no 16-14-6-755-880 ($161.83) for you. You get 16-11-7-464-403 ($5171.17 + $1000 core charge).
