I can see a situation in 3-4 years where our our LR4 is 12 years old, the GTI 4 years old and now we have 3 drivers at home with just the LR4 around. At that point I may leave the GTI with them and get myself a nicer commuter. I suspect that will almost certainly be an EV. We’ll see what’s interesting then.

But is the price of a mint, manual M3 dropping like a rock in this environment? Is it going to fall off a cliff? I have my doubts.

As a data point, my Carvana quote for the 2 was also a couple of thousand lower than just a couple weeks ago.

I got more from the dealer, plus the savings on tax for the new car. Plus, the savings of not having to do brake fluid, oil change, battery change, and possibly brakes on the 2.

Given the ease of the transaction, it was worth it to me.

I have not traded in a car in 30 years or so, and I likely could have gotten a tad more selling privately, but it definitely was not worth the hassle to me.

BTW, when I was in buying my car, there was a guy selling his M3 manual to the dealer.

Good to know. Thanks.

I'll respond to one of the many emails I've received form the dealer and see what they say. The only issue is that I don't need a new car, so unfortunately I will lose the ~$3k in tax credit towards a new car.

If I were in FC's shoes, unless I hated the M3 or if it's direct replacement was being delivered, I would hold it for the option value (porsche or other things could be delayed).

In the old days, there was a predictable depreciation curve. Maybe we'll get back to it, but it hasn't been in place for desirable manual porsches & bmw's for some time now.

Selling M3

Carvana and Vroom have both backed off significantly on their offers and are in a rough spot right now. Both stocks are tanking as investors are wondering when their inflated inventory bubble will burst.

Would recommend checking a few of the local dealers also. They all have some type of “we want to buy your car” link on their websites.

That being said, agree that unless it seems like a crazy “I can’t say no” number you might just want to keep it. I think the market has peaked and dropping on “regular” models but for something special and hard to replace (MT M3) who knows. It’s still really hard to get an allocation for one of those and there are a lot of people that don’t like the look. I don’t think the depreciation curve on your car will follow a traditional pattern.
