Rallycross
Has anyone tried it or had the urge to try it?
My local SCCA region (DC) has several events each year, and I'd love to give it a shot. I still autocross regularly and did a few track days many years ago, but do you think rallycross would require any different skillsets? I guess if I even want to try it, I should find an old car someone will let me borrow... or rent a car with extra insurance |

Looks fun. No way would I do it in any vehicle that I had to clean afterwards.
I imagine a lot of sliding and hopefully no flipping over. |

Can I co-drive? Luckily, there shouldn't be any light poles.

Let me know when/if you guys head out there. I guess I could throw the snows on the 318 and see what happens, but it makes me nervous without another piece of reliable transportation at the moment.

I'm not sure I want anyone else driving only because the likelihood of breaking something on the car is so high (the underside of the car is pretty perforated) but I'll think about it. I will only take it out after we have picked up a replacement for the Jetta - at that point the Altima really is disposable.

Haven't done it but it sounds like fun.
That's basicall an autocross on dirt or something, right?

Ok... so I've done a little more research and might pursue doing this next season instead of autocross (still autocross here and there).
Does anyone have any other car ideas other than from the list below? I'm trying to stay under $2500 for the car + snow tires + wear and tear items to replace... Honda Civic 84-95ish Mitsubishi Mirage/Lancer 91-00ish Toyota Corolla/Prizm 90s Toyota Camry/Honda Accord coupe 90s Mazda Protege 90s Ford Escort/ZX2/Focus 90-01ish Hyundai Tiburon Chevy Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire (meh) Any Subaru (but the prices on even 90s ones are still steep) ...or just use my 318 and hope for the best? Any other ideas? ...and has anyone tried rallycross this year? |

I'd look for something with a decent AWD system if you can find it. You'll want lots of traction for the dirt and a 2WD set up (either RWD or FWD) will let the tires spin pretty easily.
Doing some research I'd be looking closely at an Eagle Talon TSi / Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX Turbo in the 1994 / 1995 era. There was a model generation split between 1994 and 1995. Both available in stick, AWD, and 200-ish hp turbo 4 cyl. and circa 3100 lb. curb weights. Not bad for sub $2500. Another would be a 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4. A bit more at $3600 but has 300 hp V6 and AWD. Probably the best bang-for-the-buck in terms of high HP, and AWD. Curb weight is up at 3800 lb. but the power-to-weight ratio is the most attractive of this list. Just some random edmunds.com looking: 1991 Audi 90 Quatro - $1800-ish 2.3L I5 @ 164 hp and 157 ft-lb 3197 lb. curb weight 1991 Audi Coupe Quatro - $2100-ish 2.3L I5 @ 164 hp and 157 ft-lb 3308 lb. curb weight 1991 Audi V8 Sedan Quattro - $2500-ish 3.6L V8 @ 240hp and 245 ft-lb 3903 lb. curb weight 1994 Audi V8 Sedan Quattro - $3500-ish 4.2L V8 @ 276 hp and 295 ft-lb 3991 lb. curb weight 1995 Eagle Talon TSi Turbo AWD - $2400-ish 2.0L turbo 4 cyl @ 210 hp and 214 ft-lb 3119 lb. curb weight 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX Turbo AWD - $2200-ish 2.0L turbo 4 cyl @ 195 hp and 203 ft-lb 3093 lb. curb weight 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 Turbo AWD - $3600-ish 3.0L V6 @ 300hp and 307 ft-lb 3791 lb. curb weight 1994 Subaru SVX LSi - $2900-ish 3.3L H6 @ 230 hp and 228 ft-lb 3580 lb. curb weight 1995 Subaru Impreza Coupe LX AWD - $2400-ish 2.2L H4 @ 135 hp and 140 ft-lb 2840 lb. curb weight Trying to think of other AWD cars that would be good. Nothing much is coming to mind right now.

You can't get a 10yo 2.5RS for near 3K? Surprising.
EDIT: Damn, I guess not. Those cars hold their value irrationally well. |
