There is a border patrol check point on I10 about 20 miles east of El Paso.

I was only asked if I was American, then waived through.

Not sure what you face on I8. California stops traffic on the way in, not on the way out

There is a border patrol check on I8 west of San Diego in the westbound lanes (not sure eastbound) -- they just waived us through without stopping when we drove through it last summer (in the Tesla). A few years ago, they asked if we were all American -- our response was "2 Americans, 1 Canadian" -- and they waived us through.

The way-in stop in CA is for an agriculture inspection -- making sure nobody brings in any fruit flys...

California has agricultural inspection stations on the interstates just inside the state borders. I've had a few memorable episodes with them.

The Border Patrol has a few permanent checkpoints in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas checking traffic traveling east, west and north (not sure if there are any permanent southbound checkpoints), but they are not always manned. They also employ temporary pop up checkpoints in a number of locations in those states as well.

A little east of Yuma, AZ there is a permanent checkpoint on the 8 where I have had several extended encounters late at night and one during daylight.

I've always been waved through without questioning at the El Paso checkpoint.

We are not towing the Edge, Jutta is driving it behind me.

When we came into CA this time, up by Mt Shasta, I told the guy to "go ahead and harass my wife in the car behind me"

I have done this every time we have entered CA in two vehicles.

I don't do this at Border Control though

I spoke to my brother. The shop gave him a copy of how to get the monitors to turn on (see below) so it can pass the smog test. They told him it normally takes 150-200 miles. In traveling to different smog test stations, he's put about 40 miles on the car that have probably turned on some of these monitors.

He's no on his way to AAA to see if they can issue a temporary operating permit. (I totally forgot that AAA in CA can do a lot of DMV paperwork much faster and easier than at the DMV.)

This is what's needed:

ALL MONITORS - URBAN (CITY) DRIVE CYCLE - ALL MODELS NOT LISTED, ALL ENGINES
Steps:
1. State the engine. Idle for 20 seconds.

2. Accelerate at part throttle to 30 mph. Cruise at 20-30 mph for 2 minutes. Stop the vehicle; idle for 40 seconds.

3. Accelerate at part throttle to 25 mph in 15 seconds. Cruise at 17-25 mph for 15 seconds. Accelerate to 40 mph. Cruise at 40-56 mph for 2 minutes. Decelerate to 0. Idle for 15 seconds.

4. Accelerate at part throttle 28-36 mph for 25 seconds. Decelerate to 0 in 15 seconds. Idle for 6 seconds.

5. Accelerate to 30 mph and back to 0 in 25 seconds. Idle for 20 seconds.

6. Accelerate at part throttle to 35 mph; cruise at 35 mph for 30 seconds. Decelerate to 0. Idle for 6 seconds.

7. Accelerate at part throttle to 25-26 mph and back to 0 in 40-50 seconds. idle for 20-25 seconds. Repeat this step.

8. Accelerate at part throttle to 26 mph and back to 0 in 30 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.

9. Accelerate at part throttle to 23 mph. Drive in a stop-and-go manner from 0-28 mph for 70 seconds. Accelerate at part throttle to 33 mph. cruise between 25-35 mph, varying the speed smoothly.

10. Stop and accelerate gradually to 28 mph. Cruise at 20-28 mph for 60 seconds. Idle for 30 seconds.

11. Drive in a stop-and-go manner for between 17-27 mph for 1-1/2 minutes. idle for 15 seconds.

12. Accelerate from 0-23 mph and back to 0 in 20 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds.

13. Accelerate at part throttle to 22 mph and back to 0 in 45 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds.

14. Accelerate at part throttle. Cruise at 20-30 mph for 60 seconds. Idle for 25 seconds.

15. Accelerate steadily to 22 mph and back to 0 in 35 seconds.
