I've been a big fan of Conti ExtremeContact or whatever their replacement for the DWs is. They're great in the rain, quiet and grippy in the dry and have a compound that is a least decent in cold weather until you get the snows on. Price is fair too.

These might be my choice for replacing the crap Toyos on my Mazda when the time comes.

I thought they were great on the 325xiT years ago—even driving through some snow.

The Conti ECS was going to be my suggestion. It's definitely not the grippiest summer tire but it's truly amazing in the wet and it's fun and grippy in the dry.

Extreme Contact Sport (ECS) is a summer tire and I loved them on the turbo Camaro.

The Extreme Contact DWS 06 is an ultra high performance all season and I liked them a lot on the XK8.

The big problem with today’s most extreme summer tires is that they have too much grip.

The other problem is that tire manufacturers have traded compound shelf life for ultimate grip. So if you don’t use them up quickly, they age out.

When you compare top end all seasons with mid-range summers, the performance and feel are pretty comparable. But the A/S tire will be more versatile and last longer.

It seems like that's not really true. I've got friends with a couple years on their ECS and PS4S without noticable degradation... but neither of those tires are at the pointy-end of ultimate dry grip.

Yep, I've had both and liked them for their intended purposes. I was recommending the ECS for FC, but would suggest the DWS06 for WDC and the Mazda's intended use.

BTW, Whatever happened to the XK8? The miata and the 'vette are both gone, right?

Maybe the PS4S is dramatically improved. The PSS had a lifespan of no more than 24 months, with very noticeable degradation at 12.

I haven't used the ECS, but the DW that preceded it handled like an all season. It's actually kind of my case study for mid-range summers vs. high end all seasons.

With the caveat that while the DWS and the PS all season are very comparable on paper, the feel is totally different. The DWS feels like an all season. The Michelin feels like a summer that works when it's cold. This also carries over to ride quality - the DWS is positively gooshy vs. the Michelins.

my impression is the DWS works better with snow vs the PS AS which works in cold but not necessarily in bad cold weather?
