Amazing how rare these are these days.
Up to $2700. Someone's paying too much for a FWD Mustang!

Laugh all you want but it’s a little bizarre to me how these cars — which were pretty impressive for the time — have just fallen into a memory hole, especially compared to some others from the same general milieu.

I don't argue with their rarity and I'm not laughing. It totally fits in with the kind of of stuff that gets your attention.

I just didn't find them impressive or interesting at the time. And I still don't. If I saw one on the street, I might think, "oh yeah. Huh," and that's about the extent of it.

I had one of those too... Ruby Mica with the taupe interior. I really liked that car even though the FWD pissed me off. Heavy enough car that it was nearly impossible to keep the front wheels from losing traction on spirited launches when all that weight shifted back. Very driver-oriented cockpit.

Went through head gaskets like Pringles though.

I kicked the tires on one of those, too. Came very close to buying, just didn't pull the trigger on what would have put me very upside down including my trade

I wanted a Probe GT bad when I was 16 (the second gen version with the V6. Not the heinous looking first gen). An acquaintance had one when I was in college and it was a genuinely nice car. The V6 sounded great, too.

So, a) the second gen car was legitimately a lot nicer looking, but b) the '89s were far from heinous (though the 90 re-design was not great). The V6 engines were disappointingly gutless after the turbo four in the OG car, though.

That one went for $5100, which according to commenters is below market. Hell of a lot of car from a "huh, that's weird" standpoint.

Matter of opinion. I liked the first-gen MX-6 a lot better than the first-gen Probe, which looked like it was trying too hard with all the cladding. The three-spoke wheels were unforgivable

Ha ha that's what makes it so rad. But the interesting thing about the three spoke wheels is that those were a function of the car's original life as a Mustang; they're a direct call-out to the three spoke TRXs on the Fox bodies (and would later be echoed in the three spoke 17s on the SN95s).

I do sort of wonder if the effort to ditch the cladding and the 3 spokes after just one year was an attempt to make the car less like the Mustang it had originally been supposed to be.
