I haven't been stranded since my POS Mercury Marquis ('86) doing it to me a few times in grad school. Alternator, injectors, something else... Transmission at some point. All between 85k to 95k miles.
My mostly German cars have not stranded me in the last twenty years, just some niggles here and there. C's cars haven't been bad either. She does a lot more miles than me (18-20k/yr). Some spottiness with a 2002 Focus she had from new. Then the Subie lost its engine at 80k; talk about cooling/gasket issues. And the Civic Si ate its axle shaft in the driveway. Her e39 never even limped in the time we had it, 64k to 135k. On motorcycles, the newest has been the worst (Austrian KTM). An eight year old Ducati once had a rear brake that didn't let go but that was minor and the bike was old, no issues with several other Ducatis. New Guzzi was bad, clutch linkage let go at 1k miles (serviced at 600miles!). My bmw f700gs was bad, water pump leakage as well as clutch cable coming off in under 5k miles. All three bike faults I was somehow able to limp to the mechanic. My 2012 r1200r has been a rock for the five years I've had it (not many miles). It's the original bmw boxer to shaft design going back to the 1920's (the R32). It is an odd ride at times, but like the 911 pretty much perfected. It's the second year of an updated engine and that engine is still in use in 2020 r9t's. I do think German engineering is still very good, but under more constraints than ever before. Beyond making things high performance and solid, they are fighting cost, weight and recyclability. That's a lot of targets to optimize for. |

I have never been stranded except for one time in our MB GL450 when I knew we were super low on gas and went to a gas station that I did not know was closed down .. good thing my wife was close by in one of our other cars and came with some gas.

Re the fans not spinning a poster on rennlist said the engine is primarily oil cooled and since the oil temp wasn't hot the fans wouldn't kick on. Sounded plausible

I guess you'll drive with an eye on the temperature for a bit. Which service department, Main Line?

Yep, they're the closest to me. They seem pretty highly regarded among the local Rennlisters too.

This is interesting...
While its probably an unhealthy thing to do, I've left all my 911 searches on to see if I missed out on anything when I made the plunge buying mine. Up till now, I've been very happy with the fact that there wasn't anything else near the car I got especially factoring price. Then today the BaT car that originally got me shopping popped up for sale in Maine: https://www.truecar.com/used-cars-fo...ampaign_821208 My wife likes the color combo of ours better, but this guy still pulls at my heart strings. For comparison, mine is 2wd, 15k less miles The BaT one is 4wd has PTV, LCA and Sport Chronos and an accident. I like the white and the espresso/cognac color combo better and I think I like the Carerra Sport wheels better than my RS Spyders a little more. They're definitely easier to clean. No real buyers remorse, but a bit of pulled heart strings on this particular car.

Wheels are easy enough to swap (if not exactly cheap). I personally really dig the updated Fuchs on the 991s. https://www.fuchsfelgeusa.com/porsche-991-fuchs-wheels/ I'm also partial to the Fifteen52/Outlaw wheels, which have a similar aesthetic. https://www.sharkwerks.com/wheels/p4...urbo-s-FIFW579 For a second I thought they wanted $5K/wheel, but $5K/set is a little easier to swallow. |

Agree with JST on the no accident car...
As an aside, Josh, have you found a bike rack that works well on your 135? |

Do the Magnus Walker wheels get stormed through downtown L.A. and up and down the Harbor and Pasadena Freeways as part of the QA process?
