Rivian and Lucid

Now that Rivian has actually started series producing cars (and now that Lucid looks to be closer on that front, as well), I thought it would be good to start a thread on these new options, which seem to offer much of the Tesla tech without some of the...baggage associated with Elon Musk and his fanboi crowd.

I don't need a pickup, but the R1S is nice looking and honestly seems well-priced for a full size 3 row SUV (my spec is 77K before incentives). I'm not sure I need one of those, either, but it's kind of tempting, tbh.

The Lucid Air is really nice in person, too, though I find it a little puzzling that in 2021 the company chose "sedan" as the sole model to launch; it's not even a hatch like the Model S. The 500+ mile range versions are mid-100K, but there is a 400 mile version that starts at 77K, also.

Anyone else eying these?

Honestly, I have zero interest in boring cars that cost a lot of money from untested vendors.

I'm intrigued, but don't know much about them yet. I suspect they're out of my price range for now, but I'd like to think their presence and availability, along with increased offerings from traditional manufacturers, will help the EV market mature more rapidly.

I am a Rivian pre-holder. I gave my deposit in October of 2020 which is fairly late as Rivian started taking deposits in 2018. I am guessing I will not see mine until late 2023 or early 2024 which is fine as I do not want to be a beta tester and the F15’s extended warranty does not expire until 2024.

I have no use or interest personally; but Rivian's trucks #1 or 2 (or were they 0 or 1) were support vehicles in Ewan McGregor / Charlie Boorman Long Way Up. Those trucks ran mostly without major hitches over 14,000 miles in hostile conditions with a traveling tech. I was impressed from a distant perspective; looked like a decent start-up.

Right now, for me, it's Taycan Cross Turismo or no thanks.

I do admire what Rivian has done.... but dont necessarily want that big of a vehicle. And like others said, I just dont want to deal with a brand new manufacturer. Im sure they'll execute better than Tesla did...but still.

Same feelings on the Lucid...but so far in pictures I find it to be pretty ugly. Hard to believe i'd like it better in person but maybe?

Both Rivian and Lucid are stocked full of ex Big 3 and ex Tesla people, but without the incendiary bull shit from Musk. Will be interesting to see how much of the secret sauce he really is, if any.

The Lucid in particular looks like a surprisingly mature offering, in ways both good and bad; if I blocked the badges and told you it was an upmarket Lincoln, you’d be mildly surprised but not amazed.
