Hm. Let’s just say I don’t have Clyde’s discipline. Since 2001 I’ve had 4 M3s, none of which was less than that. Among other things. Many, many other things.

I forgot about the Boxster, which when I bought it was right at $40k with shipping from California. The truck and the Boxster definitely felt "worth it"... and I guess they still do.

Josh I understand your point about a $100k GT4 not costing as much as most $100k cars when you factor resale value, but I tend to put some miles on my stuff and a four year old GT4 withi 60,000 miles is probably not going to hold its value too well. $100k would also mean a bank note and I just feel like I'm past that point in my life. I dunno.

Yeah, I am not trying to convince you that it's a good idea to lay out 100 large for that car. I think the 3.4S is probably fine for the street, and the fact that you're not certain about keeping even that car makes it doubly silly to buy a much more expensive version. Plus for you especially if you decided the 3.4 wasn't enough, there are a lot cheaper ways to hot rod it than buying a whole new car.

Just musing that 100K for this car isn't as nuts as it sounds at first blush.

Agreed. I felt that way about the last Spyder and for the most part that held as well. This one, being the only way to get into an H6 (never mind a NA 6), will be more coveted.

Guess not. I thought the odyssey was locating one that was desirably equipped

The second most expensive was the used 2004 Armada I bought in 2006 for $28,000, then the RAV4 a couple months ago at $27,7xx.

Excluding the driveway decoration types, the least expensive was a new 2000 Altima SE in 1999 for $16,000 (or $16.4, can't quite remember). Second least expensive was the new 2017 Camaro in Feb 2018 for $19,000.

The older I get and the more income or money I have, the harder it is for me to spend money on cars. I don't know why.

The idea of a $100k car, no matter what its "value" or amount I could recover after three years, is just insane to me to the point I don't really care how good it might be.

The most expensive car I've bought was the M3 at upper 60's. It is followed by the LR4 at 60k. Then it gets pretty crowded at or under $40k (981S/997TT/V70R/E46 ZHP). Then there are a few at a lot less than that (Saabaru, MCS, Miata, JGC, etc.).

My cost of ownership on all those cars was really not that bad at all. Even the LR4, given the year, options, and condition is still worth a decent amount. Plus, after 6 years, there are still no plans whatsoever to replace it. It won't be cheap, but on a yearly basis it will not end up being as expensive as one would think.

The M3 OTOH, will almost surely hurt even if I keep it for 6 years or so.

This is kind of where I'm at mentally.

For me a big part of it is I want to be able to use my cars and not worry about big depreciation from that use. I take really good care of my stuff and I like my stuff to stay nice (i.e. no door dings, curbed wheels, etc) but if I owned a $70k M3 or a $100k GT4 I'd be really hesitant to drive it to work every day.
