Sucks to be a tech for VWAG.
Stuck perpetually in warranty hell, replacing coil packs and power window components. |

I'm always interested to see that GM's various marques end up spread all over the place. Some cars even come off of the same assembly line. Anyway, my impressions: not much has changed. Lexus still on top. Buick, Caddy doing relatively well. Hyundai makes good cars, but they don't hold up as well as their competitors yet. Kia makes money because they are inexpensive, and that's about it.
Has it been three years yet since Daewoo's introduction and subsequent withdrawal? I would think they'd be very high on this list. Somewhere around zero problems per 100 cars. |

Oop, saw them on the list. 318/100, actually not too bad. But where are they reporting all of these problems?

Hmmm -- Mini is at 383...
That would suggest we should have had 3-4 issues. Let me count ours: 1) Mysterious Electronic Gremlin #1 (its still built in Britain!). On day 1, not repeatable and has re-occurred since then. The radio was working, but buttons not controlling it, yet the steering wheel buttons did work. Lsted for ~45 minutes, even after rebooting the car several times. Started working again as soon as we were at the dealer and they got in it to take it into the shop. 2) Mysterious Electronic Gremlin #2. Car was about 3-4 months old when it mysteriously shut down while accelerating from a stop light -- my wife was driving and I wasn't with her, but the car just stopped running -- engine shut off, and nothing electical working (dash, lights, turn signals). She threw the clutch in, and pulled ofer to the side. She turned the ignition off, and it started right back up on her first try. All OBC settings had been reset to 0 and all radio station presets lost. This has not re-ocurred since then. 3) Vanishing chrome tailpipe parts. Probably a loose screw, but we lost one of the chrome tips when the car was 3-4 months old. Replaced under warranty 4) Seatback tilt mechanism broken. Replaced with redesigned part under warranty 5) Cold Start issue -- would stall after first start, OK after second. Engine software update fixed it, but it took us a couple dealer visits to get it installed -- the software was avail, but back in '02 the dealers were slow to receive the MINI-specific MODIC update, so there was no way to put it into the car for about 6 weeks. 6) Leaking coolant -- this has occurred twice. The plastic coolant tank would develop a leak and you'd have to top up the coolant almost every day until repaired. Fixed under warranty. So if you ignore the 2 electronic gremlins, we're just about what you'd expect from that survey... Edit - forgot to mention -- our Mini is 3 years and 2 weeks old -- so good timing! Edit 2 - JST's A/C issue reminded me that we also have had issues with the MINI holding the refrigerant. I partly blame this on the dealer in Atlanta (Global Imports does not treat their MINI customers very well) -- they said they checked and couldn't find the leak, but I think they just topped it off without checking. Happened again this spring -- North Scottsdale MINI found the leak and so far no problems.

If memory serves, I had something like 4 problems with mine last summer too, right off the showroom floor.

I still have to wonder if pickiness of target audience is an issue.

3 - 5 are U.S. car companies and the nobody comments on it except Blee, who calls that "doing relatively well" for two of those manufacturers.
I think that's huge compared to the type of quality control they had when they earned their "junk" reputation. rgal, do you think a chevy owner is more picky than a cadillac driver? Toyota more picky than Lexus? Just curious. |
