classic car auctions/shows
Did a search but no recent results showed anything...
Can anyone recommend a good classic car auction/show to go to? No I am not in the market, just want to work on my photography skills, take a bunch of car pics and take a quick weekend trip somewhere. Preferably not Podunk Arkansas. I know Barrett-Jackson is coming up soon but that seems like overkill. Would need to be able to actually get close to the cars but I know that with many auctions you can't even breathe on the cars much less get close enough to take some artsy pics. Any recommendations? |

There are some very cool pictures to be taken in and amongs the urban ruins of Detroit, though. See, e.g., http://www.detroityes.com/ |

Just kidding... I'll be going to Barrett-Jackson and some of the other auctions in AZ (there's 3-4 others like RM and Russo-Steele that do auctions the same week as the mega-sized Barrett-Jackson). But then again, I live a few miles north of where the auctions are held. If you're a car nut, you really should plan a pilgrimgage to Barrett-Jackson at some point. This will be my 3rd year in a row that I'm going, and I've been a couple other times before it got really big (this year there are just under 1300 cars just at Barrett-Jackson -- I remember going in '89 or '90 and thought it was huge when there were "only" 300 or so...). A good friend of mine is an auction nut, and will be staying with us for the week of the auctions -- he likes to register as a bidder so he can go up on stage to look at the cars (although I don't think he'll be bidding...). He's also managed to get us invites to some of the cocktail parties held -- we went to the RM party last year and it was amazing -- many of the cars current owners were there to answer questions, and the crowds were much smaller. RM also had some interesting new cars on display, with reps to discuss -- we talked with the Spyker rep for a bit, and kidded around with the Rolls Royce rep... If anyone's going to be in Phoenix in mid-Jan, let me know...

Monterey, CA, has the Concourse de Elegance thingy in August at Pebble, and that is usually preceded by a huge auction in the Monterey Plaza. I've never been to one there, but Speed Channel has broadcast a few of them in the past.
Sorry, not sure if they let you get close to the cars to drool or photog them, but if you're looking for an excuse to go to one of the most beautiful locales in the world this would be it. |

I would have thought Barret-Jackson was the best place to go. Why just kidding? It has so many cars that there are always photography worthy examples that aren't surrounded by people.
I don't think we will make it this year since Hannah's not a car nut yet, but it's always a lot of fun. |

Seems like Scottsdale is the place to be in January. As ZBB said, there are 3 events over the same period.
