...which is why the next 911 will be a "rear-mid engine" layout.

As I explained once before, I'm not so sure that rooting for "the Cayman becoming the 911" is a good thing for me. I mean, Let's say they keep all models and engine offerings the same. It would be great for the wealthy to be able to get an $80K, 355hp Cayman, or a $70K 325hp Cayman (or even a $110K, 400hp "Cayman GT3"). But I rather get the $60K, 295hp Cayman offered now, since that to me is already a LOT of money.

Sure, one could always get a used 355hp Cayman, but you see what I am getting at.

I'm just thinking aloud.

But if the back seats on the 911 get any smaller, it will just be a Cayman.

i think the lack of displacement evolution (i.e. bigger than 4litres) dictates a serious change for the 911. either it's going to come in extremely lightweight for a better power to weight (not likely given the cost), or the engine has to move where there's more room for displacment and power.

i think it's going to move forward a little bit and those two jumper seats will be history.

i think there is still plenty of ways to differentiate the 911 and the Detuned.

True. I guess they can leave all the current watercooled engines for the Cyaman/Boxster line and begin stuffing high-tech V8's on the 911 (a la E90 M3).

Maybe...but as much as I'd like a Porsche, a Porsche that can't carry 3 people (where one of the people is very, very small) is a non-starter for me. Perhaps Porsche figures that the Cayenne and Panamera will serve the role of "family" car, but for me the Cayenne is a joke and the Panamera is out of my price range.

I may be a very small class of consumers (perhaps just one), but I like the 911's current layout, and I hope they retain it long enough for me to actually own one.

If I could stomach the price tag, I'd go out today and get a Cayman S - to me it's the perfect two-seater. It has luggage room front and rear, it's got refinement and it'll kick butt at the track.

What more could anyone ask for?

How big does a child have to be before the 911's "back seat" is no longer viable?
