"You get the impression the engineers could have made the cockster faster and better, but they weren't allowed to because it would have been faster than the 911. I can't live with that."
"It's nowhere near as nice to drive as a boxter. It's just not as delicate" "cockster doesn't have a LSD because it would make the car faster than a 911. Stig says the car really suffers because of it." Ouch. Last edited by rumatt; 01-17-2006 at 09:32 PM. |

the key point that he makes is one that i agree with and that i've always said has been my primary difficulty in seriously considering the boxster in the past or the cayman in the future:
he opines that it's been 'too perfectly' shoehorns itself into the middle of the Porsche lineup. i.e. engineers were hampered in their ability to make the Cockster the best it could be because it cannot be allowed to eclipse the 911. Clarkson (and i) thinks that when you buy a car, you want the best car that the manufacturer can build. not something with limitations built-in on purpose.....such as lack of an LSD on purpose, as you can see in the STIG test drive (because it would be faster than the 911).

at least i see that the same humorous cynicism that he applies to american cars is equally applied to stuttgart mobiles. i recently checked the prices of the Cayman S vehicles in stock at Herb Chambers in Boston. not only is it a tacit excuse for Porsche to increase the price of 911s even more, but it's insane that the middle child can cost $70,000.

Looked over one at the dealer this weekend. Priced the way I would like it, it was over 67K!! Not worth 10K more then I paid for my E46. Sure it handles MUCH better but not 10K worth or the loss of two extra seats.
If I was going to move UP to a P-car, it would have to be a 911. Used of course, but still a 911. My coworker just got a 98 911 Carerra. Triple black 6spd. What a nice looking car. Only 20K original miles.

I great deal IMHO. It really is a nice car. Nice 18's, slotted rotors, and xenon's to name a few options.
