It's the epitome of the vehicle for people who don't care about vehicles but think they do. It's today's "secretary's car".

The X1 and whatever Mercedes calls their equivalent (I'm too lazy and don't care enough to look it up) are the same damn thing, just for the badge conscious.

If BMW sold a 3 series wagon w/ the n55 the choice would be easy. If they offered a 5 series wagon, none of the X cars would be on the list for consideration. Unfortunately, they don't. The X1 is the closest thing to a 3 wagon with the good engine that exists, so we'll check it out.
I think it has a funkiness about it in addition to rwd bias (the 2014 version), good hyrdraulic steering and dynamic ability that separates it from the CR-V/small ute purchasing crowd.

We want AWD, so the GTI is out and the Golf R is too small (the X1 may wind up too small as well).

Looks like the Golf R/GTI is slightly smaller in the passenger area but a good bit larger in the cargo area than the X1.

Which only further argues against that vehicle type ever making sense over a similarly sized hatchback. And the hatchback won't have the stigma.

Seriously, give me a GTI over it any day.

Again, though, that vehicle type is so stigmatized in my mind that the actual facts don't even matter.
new one is not the old one he is considering

I'm not seeing how any of those statements are going to help Josh pick the right vehicle for Josh.

No, but that doesn't seem to be one of his criteria.

What about a Golf wagon? Those are available with AWD now.

It sounds like you are wedded to AWD. But if not completely, we will likely being selling our 2012 328iT in the first half of this year. We have a spare set of OEM 16-inch wheels for winters, in addition to the stock 17s which are currently wearing new Michelin A/S 3+.

We're not yet at 30,000k miles. (Just under 28k at present.)

As you know, it is the very last year of the 6 cylinder RWD BMW wagons.

It has nearly all the options available at the time. It has been completely trouble-free (knock wood.)

As if that isn't 90+% of the content on this site

We're all pretty opinionated.

Josh might think this is a pretty styling suit to wear to a job interview. It might work "for Josh". But it doesn't exactly communicate what I imagine he'd want to communicate.
