The N54 needs it every 60-75k, it starts running rough and misfired a touch at cold idle. It isn't something that will leave you on the side of the road, just a gradual performance degrade. Walnut blasting is $500. The N55 is less sensitive, and a much less maintenance needy option in general. 2011 on 135i is the way to go.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my 2012 for the last couple of years

From what I can tell, 135s go for roughly the same as an e46 m3, perhaps a little higher.

I'm not unswayed by the relative newness and the driving experience of the 135. On the other hand, I apparently have a thing (and a history) of dealing with M quirks, because...dunno. Because M?

e46 m3 should be on the bottom of their depreciation curve too. If you find a clean stock lower mileage manual transmission then it might go up, IMHO

I'm at 67k on my N54, no fuel pump, turbo, or rough idle issues yet... guess I should be prepared for it though.

I've noticed my clutch is starting to get just a teeny tiny bit "crunchy" for lack of a better term on slow engagement/disengagement though. Hasn't caused any drivability issues yet. Not sure what that is. Maybe a bearing.

What price range/year/mileage/usage are you targeting? Every once in a while, I toy with the idea of selling my weekender; blue jelly bean the garage queen.
