Why? The Mustang, back in 1964/65, started up as a jazzed up version of the Falcon.... and took off like hotcakes. So... Same kind of the same thing by my reasoning.
IMO - Good for Ford to bring some excitement to the market. The fact that that there is a different, albeit more capable (and more expensive and such) Bronco coming as well is just a bonus.

Iirc jlr took the same approach with the discovery sport - it was introduced before the current big discovery but shared a lot of the same styling cues.
