Now that I've had it a few days, here's some additional thoughts.
Quote:
I would consider adding it prior to delivery -- if you spend any time in traffic, even the TACC setting alone is a huge improvement over regular cruise control. I haven't felt my "post commute home daze" this week -- that normally takes a good 20-30 min to recover from when I first get home. The Full Auto Pilot option is another story -- since its vaporware, there was no way I was going to pay $3k for something I may or may not ever be able to use. If Tesla successfully brings it to market, I'll consider it on my next car...

Thanks for more thoughts.
Yes the small diameter wheel, combined with the steering effort required, was strange. I am a little worried I won't like it. Are you getting used to it? And I did not know the TACC will come to a complete stop in traffic! Does it work well? I am embarrassed to admit this and you can take away my mudgeons card.. But I'm thinking of adding EAP just for the auto cruise in NYC traffic jams. I think having the car steer for me would stress me out more than help me relax, but auto cruise when it's crawling at 10 mph sounds great. |

Yes, I’m getting used to the wheel. The standard setting helps — still nicely firm. The sport setting is really firm.
Yes, TACC coming to a stop in traffic and continuing along afterward works really well. You can also adjust the follow distance by using the right button (left or right presses changes the distance, scrollling up or down changes the speed). I was even using it in the queue for a stop sign one morning (just had to manually brake for the stop sign).

I'd get EAP, it could really help in the future. I thought that's the whole point of this car. You sit in stop n go on the Hudson or the Hutch and sip coffee and read your paper.

Reading the paper should wait until Full Self Driving comes out. EAP requires hands on the wheel. You can take them off for a short time before warnings come up, but EAP is intended for the driver to be ready to take over at any time.

They all come equipped with the hardware so you can add it at any time after purchase (for 500 more than buying it when you order it I believe). Also think they are giving everyone 2 week free trials now. |

Right - it’s really no different than the adaptive cruise control + lane centering offered on most other cars now. Unfortunately tesla seems to charge atkeast double what others charge (way more than VW and Honda who charge around 500 now I believe) |

Right. $5k or $6k post-purchase (currently on sale for $5.5k post-purchase through Setp 25) is a stupid amount of money for auto-cruise.

That said, just yesterday someone kinda sorta into cars at the office said that Tesla is the only thing he'd buy from now on so he could read the paper. When I said "Really?" he said "Absolutely, just look around you. They are pretty much auto-driving already." He's a young trendy sort moving from Brooklyn back into Manhattan so he is selling his Cayenne, but yeah... |
