As I said I haven't been taking many pictures, but I have made quite a bit of progress. The engine is completely back together up top and both motor mounts are done. The mounts weren't too terrible but one side was soaked with oil from the oil filter housing leak and both sides had drooped quite a bit.
I changed the fluid in the transmission. Lifetime fill? Well, if you consider that this car is starting its second life then maybe that makes sense. The flywheel is back in and I planned to do the clutch and transmission today, but when I looked at the clutch kit, there's no alignment tool. Of course the only one I have is for a five-speed car and won't work with this one. Super annoying. There's really not much more I can do until I get the transmission back in the car, so I'm at a standstill right now. |

Since I obviously got bitten by the Photobucket "fuck you" I'm removing my account. I think I can share files on Drive, but supposedly the hyperlinks are dynamic, so I expect these pictures won't last long.
Today was a good day. The clutch alignment tool came in, as well as a few other things. A new air filter (not sure how we forgot the most obvious thing), and a new clutch fork, pivot bushing and retention spring. I got the clutch buttoned up and the transmission back in the car. The driveshaft is back in with a new giubo as well. The shifter feels so much better running through the gears. Everything under there was just completely worn out, as you'd expect with so many miles. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5C...ew?usp=sharing When I was under there, I noticed a bit of surface rust on the underbody near where the crossbraces go. I couldn't let that stand, so I took some 120 grit to the rusty areas and shot them with rust converting primer. I'll hit these ares with some POR-15 tomorrow after the primer is dry and then put the heat shielding on, the braces, and get the exhaust buttoned up. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5C...ew?usp=sharing I did flush the brakes and clutch. Brake fluid was in pretty bad shape, but everything seems happy now. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5C...ew?usp=sharing Not much left to do at this point before the car can hit the road. I need to put the new rear sway bar on. I need to clean up the hubs and hit them with some paint so the wheels won't get stuck to them. The car will need a four wheel alignment. The reinforcement brace needs to be bolted back on. And I need to bleed the cooling system and get the belts and fan back in. Oh, and there's no front bumper on the car Hopefully I can drive the car to work a few days next week to shake down any issues. |

Alternatively, can upload them as attachments here. Kinda glad Photobucket blew themselves up. Work blocks content from their servers because it fits a file sharing rule, so I didn't get to see the pics anyway.

Okay. I can do that.
Today, I POR-15'd the unibody areas that had surface rust, got the heat shield on and installed the new Borla exhaust, belts, and filled the cooling system for bleeding. Very few things still need to be done before I can get it on the road. Final bleed on the clutch, bleed the cooling system, install the rear sway bar (it will need new endlinks - the factory ones, uh, didn't survive extraction from the stock bar) and put the wheels / tires back on. Oh, and do an alignment. Blah. |

Even though we now have the Boxster, and I can grab it when I want, I still find myself choosing the 2 more often. It is quite like the E46, and there's something so effortless and familiar about this platform. It is a very satisfying daily driver. It's not especially a standout in any one way, but good enough in so many ways.
I'm sure Rumatt will be delighted to have his refreshed 3 back in the fleet. |

JV was going to do a bunch of cosmetic stuff was well, including a new front bumper cover. But 1) the ebay seller reneged on the remanufactured bumper I ordered and 2) the wagon isn't going to make it much longer without some attention :speechless: so I'm getting the car back sooner than later, and spend some time finding the cosmetic parts. Right now I alternate between the wagon - which handles like a boat with its long, soft springs - and the cayman - which I'm liking more am still not always in the mood for. I also don't like taking it certain places, like home depot or NYC. The e46 fits right in the middle and will be awesome to have back. Last edited by rumatt; 07-10-2017 at 08:58 PM. |
