when i get old:

i always have this vision of ambling around in an SL.

but i think my heartstrings say this is more likely:

of course, i haven't driven one.

but, in case anyone is curious, this supercharging powertrain is basically a beta test for the next Z06/super corvette which will be a 6.0litre supercharged setup (650hp).

I do too. It used to be an R129 SL600 - obviously. Though I admit the current R230 is even better looking. But frankly, I'll take any SL in good condition as a Sunday car.

...particularly a 300SL Gullwing.

You should read the new Consumer Reports take on the XLR - it fared poorly in a "supercar" comparo.

I'll be 50 next year, and I have to admit, that Mercedes SLK looks awfully nice to me

I put about as much stock in Consumer Reports car reviews as I do my mother's computer reviews. I'm fully willing to admit that the XLR-V is different from its German counterparts, but I wouldn't be surprised to find it better by some measure other than CR's.

I like CR's car reviews AND I like their computer reviews - especially since they always put, rightfully, Apple at the top of the list

Seriously, I don't put much stock in any one review, but taken together (the universe of car reviews that is), you can get a pretty good idea as to where a car stands against its competitors. CR's focus is often on the mundane, non-performance stuff - exactly the kind of thing a long-term owner has to deal with and precisely the kind of stuff C&D etc. don't worry much about.

CR's a good resource, where else can you learn about toaster ovens, lawn mowers and cars in one issue

i guess i'm still puzzled as to why the XLR costs so much more than a c6 vert (and the Z06) and why the XLR-V costs so much more than the c6z06.

i guess i don't have to understand it, but it's a simple question.

b/c it says Cadillac on the back and it's a two seater. If they don't take themselves seriously, who will?

I can't warm up to that car. It's auto only, costs way too much, and doesn't offer the world beating performance to back up the price (ala Z06).

i think, like all of the first gen V cars, it's just a start.

but it's an awfully good start, IMHO.
