My bad, I thought the difference was $2k for some reason ... yeah at $4k it is a tough decision just for headlights and leather (that you don’t want).

I don’t think I ever drove a VW since I got my license 35 yrs ago (did drive a 81 Rabbit convertible at 12 to 13 yrs old but that’s another story)but I would imagine they must be fun to drive and I picture them as solid German cars.

As I mentioned in another thread, my only experience with those is racing one at Lemons.

In the "why are cars so much heavier than they used to be" file, please check out this pic of the door of a 1987 GTI.

I am guessing that this car would not do super well in side intrusion tests compared to the modern version.

Ha for sure. I think the bodies of modern cars in general are engineered to a much higher level of safety- thicker pillars, high strength steel, etc and therefore higher weight. Then you add in the fact that cars in all classes have moved up a level (or 2) in size from what they were back then. And top that off with additional comfort/convenience items that they wouldn't have had back then.

Yeah, I owned a Fiat 850 spyder and an MG midget back in college daze. (not at the same time) Both very small cockpits. The midget was a little harder for me to get in and out of, but I could.

I don't even fit in a Miata, can't get more than one leg in. "safety" features take up a lot of room

Well, it's official. We're getting a white SE. We saw both today and my wife came away very impressed with the SE LED lights, wheels, bigger screen, and changed her mind about the leather because of dogs and sweaty, post-practice kids.

Ideally we'd skip the roof, but we'll just have to deal with it. Like I said, I'm not fighting that battle.

Dealer already found one, so it's a matter of getting a decent deal and it's done. They started with a discount of $1.7k, but I'm sure we can do better without squeezing them too much.

Well done. This seems like the quickest waffle thread to purchase situation you've ever done by about 300 days
