Why? The Mustang, back in 1964/65, started up as a jazzed up version of the Falcon.... and took off like hotcakes. So... Same kind of the same thing by my reasoning.
IMO - Good for Ford to bring some excitement to the market.

The fact that that there is a different, albeit more capable (and more expensive and such) Bronco coming as well is just a bonus.

Iirc jlr took the same approach with the discovery sport - it was introduced before the current big discovery but shared a lot of the same styling cues.

Now that I've been seeing them more often, it's kind of grown on me some. Maybe my initial thoughts were a bit too harsh.

Also, my attention is now had:

I like it, but in person it's a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Like, McLarge Huge.

I haven't seen a 2 door yet, which is the only one I'd really be interested in. Maybe those are more manageable, size-wise.

THe smoking tire recently did a review of the 2 door one with the.6 cyl. They seemed to like it and preferred the smaller size as well. I had the same impressedion when I saw the 4 door in person: its huge.

There was actually a 4 door with a stick on my local dealer's lot. I toyed with the idea of trying to cadge a drive but decided I didn't care that much.

I’ve seen a four-door one here. It is LARGE.

It didn't have a markup listed on the sticker but I didn't ask about pricing.
